I play piano too, so stuff i might play too is cool.

*:o)What are some good modern songs (pop, etc, kelly clarkson type music or whatever) for a beginner vocalist?
I wouldn't worry so much if the song is appropriate for a beginner as I would worry if it were appropriate to my age and life experiences. For example, a 10 year old singing about her boyfriend breaking her heart would be ridiculous. At that age they do not have the experiences of life behind them to be able to ';sing'; a song of that nature.
Whatever you choose make sure you understand the ';message'; of the song. Performance through singing is all about portraying emotions. If you haven't lived the experience the song is speaking of you don't have much chance of transferring that emotion to your audience.
Songs I have had students sing in the past:
9 year old: Part of Your World from 'Little Mermaid'
10 year old: Candle on the Water from 'Pete's Dragon'; Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield
9 year old: several Hannah Montana songs
12 year old: Cinderella by Cheetah Girls
5 year old: Highways and Hedges from 'O Brother Where Art Thou?'
As you can tell I work with young children, for myself I've picked these in the recent past:
*Gershwin pieces (Someone to Watch Over Me)
*'The Prayer' as duet with 10yo student
*Christmas pieces by Amy Grant (Breath of Heaven, Grown-Up Christmas List, Welcome to Our World)
If you like feel free to email me (from my profile page), I'd be glad to suggest some appropriate songs for you if you would like to give me a bit more information about yourself. What are some good modern songs (pop, etc, kelly clarkson type music or whatever) for a beginner vocalist?
A lot of Alicia Keys songs, especially ';If I Ain't Got You';, are nice songs for a beginner. Also, you can listen to the notes really well because the distractions of other instruments don't come in until later in the song.
